Patara to Kalkan on the Lycian Way: over the aqueduct to town

Updated: 2026-09-07

A half day with a town at the end, which is why it is popular as a stand-alone walk from Kalkan or Kaş. From Gelemiş the trail climbs to the Delikkemer aqueduct, walks the ridge with Patara’s sand behind and Kalkan’s bay ahead, and comes down through terraces into a resort where you can buy anything you forgot.

Distances for this section vary by source between about 12 and 15 km depending on where in Patara you start; we have not yet found a GPS figure we trust and will add one when we walk it.

Ghost cities on this stage

  • Delikkemer — the Roman siphon aqueduct on the ridge; the path runs along its top on the way out of Patara.

Highlights

  • Patara beach behind you and Kalkan bay ahead from the ridge
  • The aqueduct blocks underfoot
  • A real town at the end, with cash machines, pharmacies and a harbour

Doing it as a day walk

Take the morning dolmuş from Kalkan to Patara, walk the ruins while it is cool, then walk back over the ridge and arrive in Kalkan for a late lunch. There is no water on the way, so carry it, and there is no shade on the ridge, so start early. This is the western day walk we suggest most often to people staying in Kalkan; the Kaş equivalents are on the Kaş to Limanağzı page.

Kalkan and Kaş are half an hour apart and our Kaş or Kalkan guide explains which to base yourself in.

Questions people actually ask

Is Patara to Kalkan well marked?

The ridge section is fine; the stretch near Kalkan between the cistern and the town is reported as poorly waymarked. Keep the map open on the last hour.

Can I walk from Kalkan to Kaş along the coast?

No. There is no official coastal footpath between Kalkan and Kaş; the road runs on cliffs. The trail goes inland over Bezirgan and Gökçeören for about 55 km, or you take the bus.
