What the reports have in common is that the fear was of people and the problems were of heat, water and dogs. This page is written from Kaş for anyone thinking of walking solo, without either pretending there are no risks or inventing ones. ## People Crime against walkers is not a theme in any Lycian Way account we have read, in English or in Turkish, and the villages on the trail have been hosting strangers for twenty-five years. Pension owners will feed you, drive your bag and phone ahead to the next village. Women walking alone report attention of the ordinary, curious kind in villages and none on the path. Standard travel sense applies: tell someone your plan, sleep in pensions rather than wild camping near villages if you are uneasy, and keep the emergency number, 112, in your head. ## The real risks Heat. Mid-May to mid-September on the exposed coast is the single most common cause of a bad day. Walk early, carry electrolytes, and do not underestimate the afternoon on the peninsula east of Kaş. Water. Springs fail from July into October; the stretches from Kabak to Kınık, Boğazcık to Üçağız and the two mountain crossings need carried water. Every stage is in the water guide. Rock steps. Short roped sections before Limanağzı and on a few western stages are fine with shoes and unpleasant with sandals or in rain. Fake waymarks. Painted near Kaş, Boğazcık and Beycik to divert walkers to businesses. Trust the map on OsmAnd, not the stripe. ## Dogs Village and farm dogs, sometimes in groups, are the thing Turkish trip reports complain about most, more than water. On the Kaş stages they are reported between Üzüm İskelesi and Boğazcık and near the delta farms west of Xanthos. What works: walking poles held low, a slow steady pace, not running, and giving farms a wide berth. Ultrasonic repellers get poor reviews; the sound of an electric shock device is reported to work but is not something we would ask you to carry. Dogs guarding flocks are doing a job and lose interest once you are past. ## Phone signal and navigation Signal is good along the coast and in villages, patchy on the inland ridges and in the canyons. Do not rely on it for the map: load OsmAnd with the offline map of the region and the OpenStreetMap route, and add our GPX of the Kaş section if you are walking here. A power bank is not optional. In an emergency call 112, which works from any network; say Likya Yolu, the nearest village, and the stage. ## Making a solo walk easier without company The part of a solo walk that people find hardest is not the path, it is the phoning: pensions that only answer on WhatsApp in Turkish, boats that need arranging from a village you have not reached yet. That is the bit we take off your hands. A licensed local agency books the beds and the boats, moves your bag if you want it moved, and you still walk alone all day.
