# Kaş or Kalkan: which should you stay in?

They are thirty minutes apart on the same magnificent road and get mentioned in the same breath, but Kaş and Kalkan are different holidays. Here is the honest split.

## What is Kaş like?

Kaş is a town that happens to host tourism, not a resort built for it. There is a working harbour, a Friday market, bougainvillea-drowned lanes, and a dive-and-kayak scene that gives it year-round muscle. Evenings are meyhane tables and rooftop bars rather than clubs. Swimming is from platforms, pebble coves and the two peninsula beaches rather than long sand.

It is flatter than Kalkan through the centre, which matters more than it sounds. You can walk from most central hotels to dinner, the harbour and the market without planning around a hill.

## What is Kalkan like?

Kalkan is a whitewashed amphitheatre of villas and rooftop restaurants around a small old town and marina. It is built around the villa-with-pool holiday: quiet days, spectacular sunset dinners, a largely British crowd, and less to do on foot once you have walked the old town. It is more polished and more expensive per table than Kaş.

The amphitheatre shape is the catch. Kalkan is steep — genuinely steep — and most villas sit above the old town. The view is the reward and the walk back up is the price. If anyone in your party has knees that complain, factor this in before the photographs seduce you.

## Which is cheaper?

Kaş, on most lines. Dinner for two, a beer on the harbour, a taxi across town and a night in a small hotel all cost less in Kaş than the equivalent in Kalkan. Kalkan's restaurant scene is aimed at villa guests eating out every night, and it is priced accordingly.

The exception is accommodation at the top end: if you are a group renting a villa with a pool, Kalkan's supply is deeper and better value per head than anything comparable in Kaş. The rule of thumb is that Kalkan is cheaper to sleep in as a group of eight and dearer to live in as a couple.

## Do you need a car in each?

In Kaş, no. The town is walkable, tours collect you centrally, and dolmuş minibuses cover the coast road. A car earns its keep only if you want independent day trips.

In Kalkan, it depends entirely on where you are staying. In the old town you can manage without. In a hillside villa — which is most of them — you will want a car or you will be calling taxis for every dinner, every supermarket run and every beach. That is a real cost line, not a detail.

## Which is better for activities and day trips?

Kaş, clearly. It is the best diving base in Türkiye, the sea-kayak trips over the Sunken City leave from its side of the coast, and boat tours, Saklıkent, paragliding and the Meis ferry all start in or near town. From Kalkan you can reach the same trips, usually with a transfer to Kaş or Üçağız first.

For the same reason, Kalkan is better if your ideal holiday involves fewer transfers and more time by a pool. The distances are small either way, but the friction is not symmetrical.

## Which is easier to reach?

Kalkan, marginally. Coming from Dalaman airport — the closer of the two, about 150 km and 2.5 hours to Kaş — Kalkan sits roughly twenty minutes before Kaş on the same road. From Antalya, about 190 km and 3.5 hours to Kaş, Kalkan is twenty minutes further on.

In practice this decides nothing. Twenty minutes at the end of a four-hour journey is not a reason to pick a town.

## Which is better for families or couples?

Couples who want restaurant evenings and a pool at home lean Kalkan. Families with active kids and couples who want to do things rather than mostly rest lean Kaş. Both are safe, friendly and easy; neither is a party town.

For families specifically, the hills matter again: pushchairs and Kalkan's old town are not friends. Kaş is the easier town to have a small child in.

Choose Kaş for character, activities and town life with your holiday. Choose Kalkan for villa comfort, rooftop dinners and doing beautifully little. If you are torn: stay in Kaş, and drive to Kalkan for one sunset dinner.
